Alma I. (Evans) Holmes

Alma I. Holmes, 95, passed away at the family home on Monday, Oct. 10, 2016.

She was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Niles, the daughter of John and Minnie Evans.

She married Robert E. Holmes on Oct. 3, 1941, and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage, until his death in 2008.

A lifetime resident of Niles, Alma graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1938, and also graduated from Youngstown Business School. She was employed by Bostwick Steel Lathe and later by Niles City Schools, from which she retired in 1981.

She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church of Niles, and a 60-plus year member of the Ida McKinley Chapter of Eastern Star.

As an accomplished organist and pianist; she played for Eastern Star, Holloway and Son Funeral Home, Job’s Daughters and First Christian Church.

She enjoyed crocheting afghans, crossword puzzles and, most of all, time spent at the Lake Erie cottage, which her late husband built with her family and friends. Alma also enjoyed creating ceramic pieces and traveling extensively throughout the U.S.

She resided in Gracewoods Assisted Living for the past several years, enjoying the friendships and activities.

She is survived by and will be sadly missed by daughters, Doris Mathews and Janet Evans, both of Niles; two granddaughters, Kristin (Robert) Ivans of Boise, Idaho, and Jenna (Kevin) Steinbach of Akron.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; son-in-law, John Mathews; brother, Harold Evans; and grandson, Christopher Evans.

Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home, 611 Robbins Ave., Niles, followed by services at noon with the Rev. Dr. Bernard Oakes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Senior Independence Hospice, 6715 Tippecanoe Road, #E201, Canfield, OH 44406.

Interment will be in Niles City Cemetery.
