I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Don, he was a good guy. We were neighbors for a number of years and spent many a day taking jabs back and forth at each other like two old veterans will do about the branch of service we were in. But one time I had the pleasure of sharing this story with Don and thanking him for what he did for me.
Back in high school Terry and I were friends and one time he showed me one of Don’s medals from his service in the Marines and I was so fascinated with it that I couldn’t stop talking and thinking about it. When Terry had said something to Don about it, Don told Terry to give it to me since I liked it so much. That medal was one of the first thoughts I had about joining the service which later turned into a 15 year career. Giving ones medals away is like giving your paycheck away cause it’s something you have earned and for him to show such generosity tells a lot about his character.
When I thanked Don later in life for this he said, “ ok sailer but you should have joined the Marines”. I served in the Army but Don being Don still got his jab by calling me sailer!
I’m sorry for the families loss and he will be deeply missed.
