Eleanor Katheryn “Nonnie” Woodford, 97, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025.
Nonnie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 2, 1927, the daughter of Myrtle and Joseph Welton. She graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1945. Nonnie attended The Ohio State University for two years while her future husband, Melvin James Woodford served in the United States Army, and they married in 1947. She later earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education, with a focus on Community Counseling, from Youngstown State University. She became a Licensed Professional Counselor and was employed by Howland Schools as a teacher and later as a guidance counselor.
Nonnie was a member of Ohltown United Methodist Church in Mineral Ridge and the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial Association. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and tennis, and she especially loved following college and professional sports. More than anything, Nonnie cherished time spent with her grandchildren. She was a thoughtful listener, a loyal friend, and someone whose quiet strength and warmth made her beloved by all who knew her.
Nonnie is survived by her sister, Betty Chase; her children, Rebecca Zofko (David); Virginia Cluse (Edward, deceased); Jim Woodford (Debbie); Michael Woodford (Lori); daughter-in-law, Cynthia Woodford (David, deceased); her grandchildren, Kristen Filipov (Rob); Richard W. Czeck (Leslie); Troy Czeck; Michael Mangino (Lisa); Marc Mangino (Melissa); Jimmy Woodford (Katie); John Woodford (Jennifer); Katelyn Woodford; Alexandra Woodford; Michaela Blanchet (Chandler); and Ellie Woodford; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin James Woodford, who passed away in 2001; her son, David Dennis Woodford, who passed away in 2007; and her brother, Robert Welton.
Nonnie has donated her body to Northeast Ohio Medical University.
A memorial service will be held at Ohltown United Methodist Church in Mineral Ridge on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Calling hours will be from 1 to 2:p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m., officiated by Pastor Jim Spatholt.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Niles Community Services, 401 Vienna Ave., Niles, Ohio 44446, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
