John F. Lightner, 89, of Niles, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren following a short illness.
He was born August 13, 1936, in Niles, Ohio, the son of John P. and Elizabeth Carris Lightner.
Jack, as he was known by family and friends was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Church in Niles. Jack graduated from Youngstown State University with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. His career started at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, then retiring from RMI Company in Niles where he was the Plant Electrical Engineer.
An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, his trips to Canada with his friends and spending time at his hunting camp in Tionesta. He enjoyed cooking, watercolor painting, gardening, tying fishing flies and watching the Cleveland sports teams.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lee Hayes Lightner, whom he married on January 29, 1966; two sisters, Charlene (Walter) May and Dianne (Roy) Setterberg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated August 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Church in Niles. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 611 Robbins Ave., Niles. 330-652-2422.
Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to St. Stephen Church or the charity of their choice in Jack’s name.
