Opal L. Bell, 90, of Niles, passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital emergency room.
Opal was born July 4, 1926, in Disputanta, Ky., the daughter of John and Reecie Gadd.
Opal was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles and was active at various church functions. She worked for Republic Steel Co. for over thirty years before retiring. She was an avid reader and animal lover who enjoyed gardening, cooking and travel.
She was involved with the AFS Student Exchange Program, hosting two foreign exchange students in her home. Opal also dedicated many hours volunteering at Lincoln Elementary School.
Opal is survived by three brothers, V. John “Junior” (Betsy Downs) Gadd, Alvie (Georgia) Gadd, and Donald (Kathy) Gadd; a sister, Sue (Tom) Rooney; a sister-in-law, Angeline Bell; her dear neighbor, Robert Leonard; her “adopted” grandchildren, Kara (Jason) Stanford, Kyle (Samantha) Leonard and Kelly (Ben) Hutton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Bell, whom she married Sept. 24, 1949, and who died April 15, 2006; four brothers, Blaine, Virton, Clyde and Egbert; and two sisters, Mildred and Wanda.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles. Family and friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home, 611 Robbins Ave., Niles. Interment will be in Niles City Cemetery.
