Sam Henry McCann, age 61, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026 at Hospice House in Poland, Ohio. He was born on September 8, 1964, in Fort Smith, Ark. to parents Doyle N. McCann and Vernile Girdner. He was proceeded in death by his parents; sister, Marietta McCann; sister, Kendra Vaughn; and brother, Andrew McCann.
Sam was a proud Cherokee Native American. He loved his family, friends and pets with all his heart. Sam never knew a stranger, as said by those who knew him. He had an incredible knack for talking and making new friends. Sam grew up in Eastern Oklahoma, where he grew up in several small towns. He graduated from Cave Springs High School, where he loved to play football. He attended the Bunch Assembly of God Church and there he gave his life to Jesus.
Sam worked a variety of jobs from farming to working the oil fields. In 1984, Sam enlisted in the U.S. Army where he would meet his beautiful wife, Ann. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.; Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Gordon, Ga.; where he earned his MOS of 31K, which at that time was Combat Signal. His duty stations included Fort Hood, Texas; Baden-Wurtten, Germany; and finally, Fort Riley, Kan., where he was discharged in January 1991.
Sam and his family moved to Ohio to be near Ann’s family. There they raised four children. He enjoyed playing pool with friends in a local league and was quite good at it if he didn’t say so himself. He was always up for a good game of Farkle, singing karaoke, camping, boating and fishing, but mostly loved spending time with his grandchildren and taking road trips to visit family, which was always an interesting time.
Sam was a member of Trumbull Athletic Club, Army & Navy 244, Army & Navy Garrison, the Eagles Club, and a Mason, where he was involved in multiple fundraising events to help children until his motorcycle accident in 2004. He had a big heart and always was willing to help others.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ann McCann (Kovacs); sisters, Rosetta and Travis Anderson of Fletcher, Okla.; and Loretta and Kevin Sutton of Drumright, Okla.; his children, Kayla McCann of Niles, Ohio; Samatha McCann and William Robbins, of Sharon, Penn.; Nathan McCann and Rebecca Sericola of Niles, Ohio; Celeste and Marcus Chambers of Owasso, Okla.; his grandchildren Cameron and Jordan of Niles, Ohio; Zo’e , Jersei, Nicholas, Leland and Dexter of Sharon, Penn.; and Sariah, Myla, and Cameron C of Owasso, Okla.; in addition to many nieces and nephews and friends all over the place.
